ITEM #9
MICHIGAN LAND TRUST FUND GRANT - GROVELAND OAKS
The Commission has an opportunity to increase the present 200 acres
at Groveland Oaks by another 191 acres, through a grant from the Michigan
Land Trust Fund.
The property in question is the Simpson Lake property, which is
northwest of the park. Staff's research has found that there are three
years' back taxes owed on the property.
Purchase price is approximately $431,000; the grant application
will request an 80/20 grant from the Fund for the purchase of this property.
Attached is a map showing the potential uses of the property, detail-
ing hiking and possible expansion of camping. This property would provide
more space for the campers who utilize the park. On Memorial Day weekend,
Groveland had more than 3,000 people on the 200 acre site; the additional
acreage could create a higher quality facility.
A resolution is required from the Commission authorizing staff
to proceed with the application. Staff has contacted Mr. Titsworth,
Groveland Township Supervisor, who has no objections to this grant
application.
I am recommending the Commission authorize to proceed with this
application.

MANAGER'S REPORT
---Security measure were taken this past week at Orion Oaks due to calls from
local residents. We reditched areas that have been filled in over the years,
priced out fencing to see if the residents want to purchase it, and requested
Safety to patrol Orion Oaks at different times.
---The master plan has been submitted to the State. The four grant applications
are in the process of being reviewed by the Department of Natural Resources now.
A special luncheon meeting for commissioners will be held on July 10 to review
the opposing ideas on the future of the park system.
---The Independence Oaks Nature Center dedication is scheduled for Wednesday,
June 26, at 11:15 a.m., with a buffet luncheon being served at 12 Noon. If you
have anyone you would like invited, please contact Jan Pung to send out invitations.
---Manager and Assistant Manager will be attending a Special Parks District Forum
June 12 - 15 at the Holiday Inn in Romulus. This is a meeting of 30 special parks
districts from around the country to go over ideas, and tour the facilities of
Toledo and the Huron -Clinton Metropark system. Manager will be leading discussion
on the topic of park security.
---I'm requesting a change in the meeting date for next month to July 10, in order
to allow more time for the master plan and because of holiday and vacation
schedules.
---Attached is a report for the month of May from Anthony M. Franco, Inc. I will
include this report each month, which reviews what they've been working on with
staff for the sake of the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission.
Also attached is a list of future Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commis-
sion special events. Programs will commence this winter. Dan Stencil, with his
new responsibilities for the Commission, will be in charge of these activities.
Most of these will be co -sponsored by other agencies and corporations. I will
have a further update at a later meeting.
---Reservations are now being made for the NRPA Congress in Dallas on October
24 through 29. Please let Karen know as soon as possible whether or not you plan
to attend.
