1985 VOLUNTEER PROGRAM SUMMARY
Since the inception of the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Comm-
ission, volunteers have been utilized extensively over the years of our growth
to expand and develop the variety of programs and facilities available for
public use. In recent years (since the late 1970's) many volunteers have
made significant contributions as organized groups and as individuals.
In 1985 we had a banner year for volunteerism with 8,856 hours provided
by 400 volunteers to the Commission. A conservative dollar value for this
volunteer service (includes technical skills and talents) at a rate of $10.00
per hour is nearly $90,000 in labor cost savings. Following is a list of
hours provided by groups:

recognized for their contributions and they receive a momento (1985: Coffee

MICHIGAN LAND TRUST FUND GRANT - GROVELAND OAKSg
Joe Figa informed the Commission that the 191± acres adjacent to and north of
Groveland Oaks is available for purchase. The Commission was offered this property
a few years ago, but turned it down because of the unavailability of funds at
that time.
There is now a good possibility of acquiring that land for a nominal cost through
a grant from the Michigan Land Trust Fund. This would be a 20/80 grant; of the
approximate $431,200 purchase price, the Commission would pay $86,240, with the
balance coming from the Trust Fund. The Commission's portion would come from
uncommitted funds in the Capital 'Improvement Budget.
Joe walked the property with Assistant Parks Naturalist Lynn Conover and found
a nice variety of woods, swamp, meadows, and wetlands. He distributed a map
showing the possible uses of the acreage, including additional campsites, trails,
and a possible golf course.
Staff requested Commission approval to proceed with the grant application and
an accompanying resolution.
Moved by Mrs. Fox, supported by Mrs. Moffitt to authorize
staff to proceed with a grant application through the Michigan
Land Trust Fund for the purchase of approximately '191 acres
.adjacent to and north of Groveland Oaks, with the acceptance
of the following resolution:
WHEREAS, the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission
recommends submission of an application to the Michigan Land
.Trust Fund for acquisition of some 191 acres of land north of
and adjacent to Groveland Oaks County Park, and
WHEREAS, the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission
agrees to match 20% of said acquisition with funds designated
from the one -quarter mil, and
WHEREAS, the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission
will take title to said property, provide appropriate develop-
ment and assume maintenance and operation costs.
NOW,'THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County r'
Parks and Recreation Commission approves the submission of said
grant and refers it to the appropriate county officials for the
appropriate processing.
Motion carried.

ITEM #13
MANAGER'S REPORT
---The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission billboard went up
August 20 on the west side of Lapeer Road (M-24) and I-75. The depart-
ment has received many favorable comments on the board.
---Red Oaks Wave Pool: Barton Malow is intending to turn over the keys
and the functioning wave pool by October 1. All asphalting and concrete
work has been completed, and they are in the process of painting, instal-
ling gates, and landscaping.
Barton Malow has had some instances of vandalism; therefore, as
we take over the facility, we will have Safety at the park each night
until November 15.
---Oakland County Purchasing has the specifications for the fencing for
Orion Oaks, and is proceeding to let out bids.
---Lew Wint, Pecky Lewis, Jack Olsen, and I will be attending the South
Oakland Mayors Association meeting on September 10 in Berkley to discuss
the working relationship between the Parks Commission and the communities
in the south end of the county. We will make a presentation on what
has been done to date or being planned at Red Oaks.
Also, we are going to present the Van Dyke Sports Center concept
to the mayors for their consideration for future activities at the Red
Oaks Park. Will also show their prints at the Commission meeting.
---We received 80 entries for the Name the Lakes Contest at Addison Oaks,
which ran this summer. Staff has organized a committee to review the
entries and will present the top eight names to the Commission for a
final decision at the October Commission meeting.
