Bradford Woods is the home of Camp Riley for Youth with physical disabilities. Ray Carlson, who started Bradford Woods, is a friend of Tom Heinrich. Lilley Foundation money has helped support it. OTHER SIMILAR CAMPS: Mentioned during the meeting were two camps near Grand Rapids: Camp Indian Trail for handicapped and Camp Tashmabeta for blind. Paul Newman has a camp for children seriously and terminally ill in Ashford, Connecticut. Near St. Louis there is a fine camp for handicapped. TRUST FUND: There is a $1 million trust fund for a camp for blind in Greenville, Michigan. Administered by the School for Blind, this fund has not been used during the past few years. WHO MIGHT STAFF? Intern programs might be established with state universities. Dan Ferguson, of Michigan State University, is particularly interested in blind. Roger Kolar, of Central Michigan University, is concerned about handicapped. INITIAL FUNDING: Mr. Richard suggested state grants might be used to start the program. It is figured that it would be $65 per square foot to accommodate handicapped. Other groups to consult would include: Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, fraternities, and foun- dations. WHY NOW? There is a need for services for handicapped. People recognize the value of recre- ation. The 30 camps in Oakland County are utilized only 25% of the time. Small camps can't exist. Currently there are only two camps for the special population in Oakland County. This is a time of inter -agency collaboration. FUTURE: The Commission should hire a consultant to do a master plan. A community advisory board should be established. It was suggested that the OCPRC build the camp. Everyone present was very supportive and would like to proceed. 14 - 2 ITEM #15 MANAGER'S REPORT ---Attached is the Public Communications Quarterly Report for October through December, 1986.
