ALL -DEPARTMENT WORKSHOP
During the past year, we have been increasing opportunities for staff throughout
the parks system to become involved in programs to improve communications and
professional growth.
The attached memo outlines some of these programs and opportunities available
to all employees.
On Monday, February 1, 1988, we will hold an All -Department Workshop designed
to share information on projects and goals for the coming year, hear a presentation
by a well-known employee development speaker, and offer another opportunity for
employees to provide feedback.
The day begins with low-cost cholesterol testing by the Oakland County Health
Department for all parks employees who wish to be tested.
Following a luncheon, there will be a tour of the new administrative office
building.
The afternoon program starts with a motivational presentation by Michael
Wickett, who has done hundreds of speeches and seminars, and has several programs
on audio cassette tape, which are nationally distributed.
Other topics for the day include:
-- The State of the Parks/News Goals and Directions, Ralph Richard
-- Update of the Master Plan and New Projects, Joe Figa
-- Update on Orion Oaks Planning, Joe Figa/Dan Stencil
-- New Staff and Personnel Changes, Jon Kipke
-- Marketing Efforts, Janet Pung
-- Incentive Committee, Rob Coffey

We feel that this day of communication and employee participation will be
a valuable contribution in improving our services to all of our park and golf
course guests.

IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Subject: -
In a continuing effort to improve staff communication and provide opportunities
for professional and personal development, I would like to review with you
some of the progress that has taken place.
One of the first steps was the Communications Workshop presented by
Matthew Seeger via Walsh College. Following that seminar, employees had
an opportunity to respond to a survey asking your suggestions on (1) options
for personal growth, (2) improving employee to employee relations, (3) job
performance improvement, and (4) programs benefitting the department overall.
Among the programs or opportunities established or ongoing are:
1. Personal Growth
-- Employee to Supervisor/Supervisor to Employee Communications
Seminar
-- Stress Management
- a presentation will be given by a representative of the Oakland
County Health Department or a person from St. Joseph Hospital,
Pontiac
- options for individual employee participation in ongoing
stress management education will be explored
-- Professional/Personal Development Cassette Tape Services
- Many topics and titles ranging from customer service and
stress management to public speaker, leadership, and being
a "no -limit" person.
-- Recognition of professional/personal accomplishments in Oaknotes
employee newsletter
-more-
,-7_A
MEMO
RALPH RICHARD
October 13, 1987
Page 2
2. Employee to Employee Relations
-- An incentive committee has been created to include personnel
from many areas
-- The incentive committee coordinated an all -department and family
picnic at Red Oaks Waterpark; a Christmas party is being planned
-- A suggestion box program has been implemented at all locations
to encourage ideas, comments and proposals of all types
-- Options will be explored to revise ways of honoring employees
at the annual Recognition Banquet.
-- Management to support staff communication is available through
park commission updates and supervisors' meeting minutes
-- Parks staff can read about new developments, accomplishments
and projects through the Oaknotes newsletter
3. Job Performance
-- Employees have attended a wide range of professional improvement
and training programs on scores of topics including:
- Word processing, management effectiveness, Revenue Sources
management school, getting things done more effectively,
training for equipment mechanics, national professional association
conferences, marketing schools, etc.
-- Service Effectiveness Training has been made available to staff
and has been incorporated into orientation for seasonal employees
As you can see, we have started to make improvements in our department
on better communication and training but like most things, there still are
areas in which to grow for all of us.
If you have any ideas, please let me or your supervisor know. Remember
it's your department and your life and we all would like to be happier and
growing people. This is one way of improving it.

To Whom it may Concern:
There is definitly a lot of developing going on through out
Lake Orion, Oxford, and Waterford areas, along with many more,
but the Parks are also there. I live in a development with a
park right next to it, I just want to let you know that it is
well appreciated land.
Many people use it for fishing, hiking, just a chance to get away
from the rush, and the heavy developing. Changes come about
rapidly and nothing wrong *ith that, but the parks are well ap-
preciated.
Thank you for your time, and your consideration.

RECEIVED
With 1987 drawing to a close, the MRPA Scholarship Committee has taken the
opportunity to reflect on a banner year and would like to say thanks again for
all of your great help along the way. So, on behalf of the Committee, I would
like to extend my sincere appreciation to you and Oakland County Parks &
Recreation Commission for your continued support of our Committee. Your
gracious contribution of an excellent golf course at a very nominal fee enables
us to make great strides toward our ultimate goal. That is generating
thousands of dollars to award scholarships to outstanding students majoring in
Parks & Recreation. We take pride in assisting those students who are working
hard to represent the future of our profession.
Our 15th Annual Golf Outing was filled to capacity once again. Please
extend our special thanks to all of your staff at Springfield Oaks who worked
extremely hard to make our event very special. Their cooperative concern and
friendly and courteous demeanor really has a positive reflection on our
Committee and the MRPA as a whole.
Again, many thanks to you and the Commission for your fine support and
Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
