Staff is requesting approval of the proposed rates now, as groups have already been contacting us for outings for next year; no fees have yet been established. A list of area golf courses comparable to Lyon Oaks is attached for your information. 8d-1 ITEM #9 "DISABILITIES TODAY" TELEVISION PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP Roger McCarville and James Saliba of "Disabilities Today" have submitted a $4,000 sponsorship proposal to the Commission for promotional consideration during the Channel 56 television series on social and recreational opportunities for the physically and mentally impaired in metropolitan Detroit. Staff has reviewed the proposal and recommends approval. This television series is an excellent opportunity to promote Oakland County's commitment to serve this segment of our service population. This sponsorship may also tie into program promotions included in the Beaumont U.S. Department of Education Grant. Funds for this expenditure are available form the 2001 Public Communications Operating Budget. Due to the nature of this sponsorship opportunity and its potential impact, staff may recommend extension of the sponsorship in January, 2002. Enclosed is sponsorship information for your review. 9-1 Sponsored By WRIG MOBILITY FILIPplspt , •: First To Serve .. disa l iff ff '-Mml& 10Ar l' ff jr i U ilities,... l/sue The Television Show That Focuses on the Disabled Community Hosted By Roger McCarville www.disabilitiestoday.com 248-689-2610 Detroit PBS Channel 56 it Public Every Tuesday at 5:30 pm Flute c Tv Broadcasting Stations Additional Support Provided By: Easter Seals Southeast MI Paralyzed Veterans of America MI Chapter Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan Standing Wheelchair Mental Illness Research Association Wheelchair Getaways Creative Controls, Inc. 9-2 1r0 bilitl dsaes ` :00 r den amPnny" r ire 51311p1 aid osa s tks .lndthe prop the show. lalll a a C°' pa nelOsedy° n sp°°zonthe disables pak noes. Eastape i` , i" disabilities;;;, !- k ;;:=TODA000 Y "A division of Burke Video Company" Disabilities Today Mission Statement According to the most recent edition of the Americans with Disabilities Act, over 50 million Americans suffer from some sort of disability. Disabilities range from mild hearing loss and diminished eyesight to developmental disabilities, from strokes and heart disease to quadriplegia. It is estimated that at some point in their lifetimes over 80% of Americans will have some type of disability. And yet with these overwhelming odds that the majority of Americans will experience a disability, there is an obvious void of information on disabled issues. Our show, Disabilities Today is changing that. A weekly 1/2-hour magazine format show, Disabilities Today is bringing these issues to the forefront. We hope to accomplish many things: 1.) We want to give hope to the many who suffer by showing them that there are others like them who have overcome obstacles and misconceptions of others, to lead normal, fulfilling lives. 2.) We want to provide information. Information that disabled Americans can use now, information that is difficult to find anywhere else; what new technologies are being used to solve problems, what is happening on the legislative front, what vacation destinations are handicapped accessible, who is or isn't leading the way to make things better for our disabled. 3.) We also want to inform the general public. For too long disabilities have been stigmatized. Disabled people are routinely discriminated against, both knowing and accidentally. And mainly because of ignorance. We want to show the public what disabilities are all about and what people can do to help change perceptions. We believe the time is right for a show like this. And we believe that we are making a difference. 1441 East Maple • Suite101 • Troy, Michigan 48083 • Office (248] 689-2610 • Fax (248) 689-4270 www.disabilitiestoday.com 9-4 #N//s • • ■ .4 bi diss '' TO D of Burks Video ComPeny I / .P dNisian isabititiea Today Q onsors First Benefits to our sP bilities Today . or of the Disa There ►s ming a spo ue television Pa g yaurse S a a many benefits to bec° a un►q bps►s. You will receive two ten second spots, one at the beginning and one at the end of each show. You will receive prominent exposure on the "Disabilities Today" website with links to the website of your choice. And you will receive preferential treatment when it comes to producing each show. By this we mean that if there is a way that we can promote your company or organization through stories, we will. A "Partnership Underwriter" sponsorship is $70,000 for a six-month period. Show Supporters A second way to support the show is to buy a listing in the "Additional Support Provided By:" credit roll at the end of each show. We will guarantee that the name and phone number of your company will be shown for at least four seconds. We will also list your company on our website and provide a link to the website of your choice. A "Show Supporter" sponsorship is $2500 for a three-month period, or $4000 for a six-month period. Coverage Both levels of sponsorship give your company presence on WTVS Channel 56 in Detroit as well as over 1200 cable stations throughout Canada for a potential of over 4 million households. It will also include the rest of the Michigan PBS network once our negotiations with those networks are completed. 1441 East Maple • Suite101 • Troy, Michigan 48083 • Office (248) 689-2610 • Fax (248) 689-4270 www.disabilitiestoday.com 9-6 N O rl N b z Z n ti rlu W _ 1 N ro v' VIP_—_ _ ORCHARD LAKE ROAD c e e n $ n I SIPS 919 ZiZ ITEM GRp►IT EXTENS. JUN 1 1 mi As you may know, according to the State of Michigan, Ferndale is one of only four distressed communities in Oakland County. This status reflects our weak property tax base and the relatively and disproportionately high percentage of low -to -moderate income Oakland County residents who reside in our Community. Recent community and youth surveys indicate a great need for more and affordable local recreation options within the community. Our failure to address these needs could result in greater youth drug and criminal activity and fewer senior citizen health and fitness options. We may also be the only community in Oakland County without usable tennis courts. Our only tennis courts are on property jointly owned by the Ferndale School District and City of Ferndale and they are in deplorable condition and too dangerous to use. For several reasons beyond our control, neither the City nor School District has the $225,000 in funds to reconstruct these desperately needed courts. I am writing to ask for your help in getting these tennis courts back on line in south Oakland County. We would be happy to discuss any arrangements that may be possible to get these courts back on line as quickly as possible. Perhaps the Parks and Recreation Board can consider a distressed community recreation project grant, or low -interest long-term recreation capital improvement loan, or perhaps we can deed or lease it over to the County parks program, surely something must be possible. Our residents are paying the County parks tax too and unfortunately do not have regular access to the bulk of the mid -to -north County park amenities. We need your help and support to improve our parks and recreational infrastructure now. I'm confident we could manage to work out an equitable win -win with just a little effort. Thank you for your consideration. I would be happy to meet with the Board at your earliest convenience. ell, jomn;.tt City Manager T WB/saa cc: Mayor and Council Marsha Mellert, Recreation Director Gary Meier, Superintendent of Ferndale Schools Ruel McPherson, County Commissioner 13-2 TO #14 FrCRrS K -pop TrvE immediill followin EXECU 8 Kohn, .
