ITEM CATEGORY SPONSORED BY Grant Penny Luebs INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has requested grant funding from the State of Michigan, Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Public Safety Academy Assistance Program for employed recruits to attend a basic training academy beginning January 2024 for the amount of $144,000. Law enforcement agencies are eligible for up to $24,000 per recruit for salaries and benefits while attending the academy, as well as academy costs. Funding for the MCOLES Public Safety Academy Assistance Program is available until September 30, 2026 or until funds are exhausted. This is the third academy Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has applied for. POLICY ANALYSIS Acceptance of this grant does not obligate the County to any future commitment and continuation of this program is contingent upon continued future levels of grant funding.
