Project Overview: Hospitality House operates a "client-choice" pantry to combat food insecurity,
alleviate financial stress, and build community support. Designed like a small grocery store, the
pantry allows clients to shop for food that meets their family's dietary needs and preferences. Clients
can select from a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and shelf-stable items,
ensuring they only receive food they want and will use, which allows clients to shop with dignity and
reduces waste.
Twice each month, we allow clients with incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level to come in
and ‘shop' our pantry. Over the past two years, our pantry has seen a significant increase, now
supporting approximately 150% more individuals and families. By the end of 2024, we anticipate
that we will serve over 2,100 households, consisting of over 5,000 individuals.
In total, we expect to distribute more than 1.3 million pounds of food in 2024, valued at over $2.5
million. To provide perspective, it costs $194.44 to feed a family of four three meals a day for a
week (7 days). In addition to the pantry, Hospitality House runs the Weekend Food Program
(WFP), which addresses food insecurity and nutritional gaps for students who rely on school meals
during the week. The WFP provides six meals and four snacks each Friday in discreet backpacks to
pre-K through 12th grade students, ensuring they have food over the weekend. Currently serving up
to 345 students in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, the program will expand to another
Oakland County district in 2025.
The total budget at Hospitality House is $1,525,890 which is comprised of $645,290 monetary
revenue and $880,600 In-Kind support.
Project Type: Funding Assistance
Budget: $10,000
Timeline: March 12, 2025
Possible Funding Partners: Additional community partners.
Expected Impact: The request will support Hospitality House’s food pantry and Weekend Food
Program, helping families and children throughout Oakland County who rely on these services for
nutritious meals. Funding will also be utilized to raise public awareness about food insecurity.
Indirect cost savings through community support, potentially lowering food insecurity rates and
reducing the long-term need for emergency services. Those benefiting will include the clients who
shop at the client choice food pantry, located in Commerce Township. The pantry provides a
traditional grocery shopping experience with a selection of fresh, frozen, and shelf stable foods,
distributing over one million pounds of food annually. The children who participate in the Weekend
Food Program will also benefit. The Weekend Food Program delivers six meals and four snacks
each Friday in discreet packaging to schools for children who rely on school meals as their primary
source of nutrition. We currently service 310 students and provide 7440 meals and 4960 snacks
monthly.
BUDGET AMENDMENT REQUIRED: No
