ITEM CATEGORY SPONSORED BY Grant Penny Luebs INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Sheriff's Office is applying to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for Public Act 451 funding administered through the Marine Safety Grant Program to conduct Marine Safety activities. The 2025 grant application funding request is $670,401; the program period for state funding is January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025 and the program period for federal funding is January 1, 2025 through September 30, 2025. There is no match requirement for federal funding and a 25% match requirement for state funding, which will be met by Marine Safety Program expenses budgeted in the Sheriff's Office General Fund. This is the 50th year the Sheriff's Office has applied for Marine Safety grant funding. Last year's award was $173,500. POLICY ANALYSIS Acceptance of this grant does not obligate the County to any future commitment and continuation of this program is contingent upon continued future levels of grant funding. No budget amendment is required at this time. If awarded, funding can be used on any eligible marine safety item such as (1) law enforcement wages and benefits and (2) contracted services, supplies, and materials. An example of law enforcement wages and benefits charged to this grant would be the boating safety classes offered to the public. BUDGET AMENDMENT REQUIRED: No Committee members can contact Barbara Winter, Policy and Fiscal Analysis Supervisor at 248.821.3065 or winterb@oakgov.com or the department contact persons listed for additional information.
