Motion to approve the additional funding of $96,000 from the State of Michigan, Michigan
Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Public Safety Academy Assistance
Program for four of the five employed recruits attending the basic training academy beginning in
August 2024; further, authorize the Chair of the Board of Commissioners to execute the grant
agreement; further, amend the FY 2024 budget as detailed in Schedule A.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has requested grant funding from the State of Michigan,
Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Public Safety Academy
Assistance Program for employed recruits to attend a basic training academy beginning August
2024 in the amount of $96,000. Law enforcement agencies are eligible for up to $24,000 per recruit
for salaries and benefits while attending the academy, as well as academy costs. Funding for the
MCOLES Public Safety Academy Assistance Program is available until September 30, 2026 or until
funds are exhausted.
This is the fifth academy the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has applied for.
POLICY ANALYSIS
This is the fourth installment of the funding for the program. The initial funding was accepted by the
Board on May 25, 2023, via resolution #2023-2912, for the time period of January 1, 2023 through
December 31, 2025, The first amendment was approved on April 11, 2024, via resolution #2024-
3952 and the second amendment was approved on August 1, 2024, via resolution #2024-4294.
Acceptance of this grant does not obligate the County to any future commitment, and continuation of
this program is contingent upon continued future levels of grant funding.
