ITEM CATEGORY SPONSORED BY Gift/Donation Penny Luebs INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND On June 29, 2021, a memorandum of understanding between the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and the Oakland County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (“Union”) created a Therapy Canine Program within the Sheriff’s Office. The Training Unit is responsible for ensuring each Handler is up-to-date on training including, but not limited to, obedience, certification, and service/therapy training with certification from a nationally recognized therapy training association. The Therapy Canine Handlers are sworn personnel and the Therapy Canine Program will be supervised by the Training Unit. This is a request to accept a donation of two support canine dogs named Maggie and Chip from Mission Oakland, which is a 501(c)3 (non-profit), established in 2019, with a mission to support the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, community organizations within Oakland County, and to lend financial assistance to those who are battling hardship and illness within the law enforcement community. Maggie will be assigned to the Rochester Hills substation and Chip will be assigned to a quality assurance supervisor in the Emergency Communications and Operations division. POLICY ANALYSIS The cost of food, veterinary care, grooming, boarding where necessary, equipment, and other related items for the canines will be paid by the Sheriff's Office. The estimated cost is $5,000 per year, per dog. If the Handler or Support Canine is retired, the Handler has the option to purchase the Support Canine for $1.00. Mission Oakland is proud to donate Therapy Canines Maggie and Chip to the Sheriff’s Office and relinquishes all ownership, responsibility, and rights for these Therapy Canines. The total value of the Therapy Canines is $7,000. Further, all financial obligations and care of the canines will no longer be the responsibility of Mission Oakland. Mission Oakland is honored to be able to provide this Therapy Canine to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and wishes Maggie and Chip as well as their handlers the best in their very important role in the agency and with the citizens they serve.
