ITEM CATEGORY SPONSORED BY Special Project Christine Long INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND 1. First and Last Name (Person Submitting the Form): Emily England 2. Organization (Person Submitting the Form): Charter Township of Commerce 3. Email Address (Person Submitting the Form): parks@commercetwp.com 4. Phone Number (Person Submitting the Form): 248-926-0063 5. Last Name of Sponsoring Commissioner: Long 6. Project Overview: The Commerce Township Bicentennial Celebration is a one-day community event marking the 200th anniversary of the Village of Commerce Township. The celebration will take place on June 14, 2025, and is designed as an inclusive, family-friendly festival honoring the Township’s rich history and civic identity. Planned activities include a 5K run, pancake breakfast, children's games, live musical performances, vendor booths, pony rides, a petting zoo, and other attractions that reflect the spirit and heritage of the community. This milestone event will bring residents together for a full day of celebration, while also welcoming visitors from surrounding areas. 7. Project Type: Sponsorship of an Event 8. Provide a proposed budget breakdown for the project, including but not limited to the estimated cost of the overall project, and specifically how much you are asking the Board of Commissioners (BOC) to contribute: The total cost of the Commerce Township Bicentennial Celebration is estimated at $50,000. The Township has committed general fund dollars to support the event, and planning is being led by municipal staff and community volunteers. This request seeks a $5,000 contribution from the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. These funds would be used to support enhancements to event programming, such as expanded children’s activities, additional entertainment, or improved infrastructure for the day. The County’s contribution would represent a small but meaningful share of the total project cost and help elevate the quality of this landmark event for Township residents and neighboring communities. 9. Provide a detailed timeline for implementation of the project: The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Planning is currently underway and will continue through the spring, including coordination with vendors, performers, and municipal departments. Final event setup and logistics will occur in the days leading up to the celebration. 10. Provide detail on any possible funding partners or matching funds: The Township is funding the event primarily through its general fund and is managing event planning internally. Although this specific request is not tied to a matching program, the event benefits from in-kind support from community partners, volunteers, and local vendors participating in the day’s festivities. The County’s sponsorship would complement these local resources and enable a broader public reach and experience. 11. Describe the anticipated impact of the project and how its success will be evaluated: The Bicentennial Celebration is expected to draw a large turnout from within Commerce Township and neighboring communities. It will foster a sense of shared history, pride, and civic connection, particularly through family-oriented programming and public engagement activities. The success of the event will be measured by attendance, feedback from participants and local partners, and the ability to host a safe, inclusive, and memorable experience that honors the Township’s 200-year legacy. A summary of outcomes will be available following the event and can be shared with the Board. 12. Include any additional information or supporting documents relevant to the project: Emily England, who is organizing the event, will be actively involved in both the planning and implementation stages, including working on-site the day of the celebration. No support is required from Oakland County departments. This request aligns with the Board of Commissioners’ authority and public purpose criteria, as it supports a significant local milestone through an inclusive event that benefits County residents and promotes community cohesion.
