updated expiration dates for delinquent dog licenses effective June 2, 2026; further, any County
department authorized to sell dog licenses is directed to implement and administer this policy.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
Oakland County Dog Licenses conform to pricing and delinquent dates per the Michigan State Dog
Law of 1919 (Public Act 339). Oakland County recently began using a new system (DocuPet) to
process dog licenses, in which it will be beneficial to make the licenses valid for one year or three
years from the date of purchase. Making the delinquent period thirty days from the expiration of the
license.
POLICY ANALYSIS
• A license is considered delinquent and is subject to a late fee of $40 if renewed more than
thirty (30) days after its expiration date.
• Oakland County implemented a revised dog licensing system, DocuPet, on December 18,
2025, under which all dog licenses expire 1-year from the date of issuance, or 3 years from
the date of issuance, depending on the type of license sold.
• Under the old (or current) fee structure, any 1-year delinquent license would cost a flat-rate
fee of $40 after June 1st, regardless of what license was purchased, and any 3-year
delinquent license would have a delinquent fee of $15. Under the new proposed delinquent
fee structure, all delinquent licenses would be charged a late fee of $40, in addition to the
price of the license, if renewed more than thirty (30) days after its expiration date.
• If this item is approved, the fee schedule listed on the Animal Shelter's website would be
updated.
• The old (current) License and Fee Structure is as follows:
1 Year Spayed/Neutered: $15
1 Year Male/Female: $25
1 Year Spayed/Neutered - Senior: $14
1 Year Male/Female Senior – Senior: $23
3 Year Spayed/Neutered: $40
3 Year Male/Female: $70
3 Year Spayed/Neutered – Senior: $37
3 Year Male/Female – Senior: $64
1 Year Delinquent (After June 1st): $40
3 Year Delinquent – Spayed/Neutered: $55
3 Year Delinquent – Male/Female: $85
3 Year Delinquent – Spayed/Neutered – Senior: $52
3 Year Delinquent – Male/Female – Senior: $79
• DocuPet only retains the credit card fee associated with each transaction; all other fees are
transferred to the County.
