HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2018.02.21 - 806369 OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS REPUBLICAN CAUCUS MINUTES February 21, 2018 Meeting called to order by Caucus Chairperson Shelley Taub at 6:21 p.m. in the Courthouse Committee Room A, 1200 N. Telegraph Road, Pontiac, Michigan. Roll called. COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Berman, Crawford, Dwyer, Hoffman, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Middleton, Spisz, Taub, Tietz, Weipert. (11) EXCUSED ABSENCE WITH NOTICE: Fleming, Gingell, Long. (3) Quorum present. Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe addressed the Caucus regarding the Michigan Department of Corrections inspection of the Oakland County Jail and the virtual active shooter training program. Moved by Berman supported by Kowall the minutes of the February 1, 2017 Caucus be approved. A sufficient majority having voted in favor, the minutes were approved. The members of the Caucus discussed the Board Agenda. Commissioner Middleton addressed the Caucus regarding Finance Committee item g.: entitled Board of Commissioners – Participation in the City of Southfield Downtown Development Authority. He stated that the resolution would be moved from the Consent Agenda to the Regular Agenda, and an amendment would be proposed. Discussion followed. Malcolm Brown, Deputy County Executive, Mary Anne Jerge, Assistant Corporation Counsel and Keith Lerminiaux, Corporation Counsel addressed the Caucus regarding the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission Act. Discussion followed. Chairperson Shelley Taub addressed the Caucus to introduce a proposed Miscellaneous Resolution entitled: Board of Commissioners – Opposing the State Budget Office’s Proposed Amendments to the Michigan Indigent Defense Act, MCL 780.991 et a. She stated that she will be requesting suspension of the Board Rules for immediate consideration. Discussion followed. Chris Ward, Board of Commissioners Administration Director, Program and Operational Analyst addressed the Caucus regarding the Caucus Memo. Republican Caucus Minutes Continued. January 17, 2018 70 Discussion followed. Commissioner Tietz addressed the Caucus and stated that Commissioner Woodward will be introducing a proposed Miscellaneous Resolution entitled: Board of Commissioners – Call for Action by the United States Congress and the Michigan Legislature to Protect Students from Gun Violence. Discussion followed. Chairperson Shelley Taub addressed the Caucus and stated that Commissioner Gershenson will be informing the Board of Intent to Discharge MR #17349 entitled: Board of Commissioners – Oppose Senate Bills 584, 585 and 586 – Authorizing Individuals to Carry Concealed Weapons in Churches, Schools, Stadiums, Bars, and Other Designated Gun-Free Zones.
