RE: Board of Commissioners — Oakland County Recognizes June 8 — 14, 2008 as
NATIONAL FLAG WEEK and June 14, 2008 as FLAG DAY
TO: Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14' as "Flag Day" to cover all
succeeding years in Presidential Proclamation 1335 of May 30, 1916; and
WHEREAS, since 1966 the President of the United States has customarily issued a proclamation
recognizing June 14th as "Flag Day" and the week that includes June 14 th as "National Flag
Week"; and
WHEREAS, on June 14, 1777, John Adams introduced the following resolution before the
Continental Congress as it met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: "Resolved, That the flag of the
thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen
stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."; and
WHEREAS, June 14th commemorates a significant patriotic moment for the history of the
Country that is recognized through National Flag Week and Flag Day ceremonies and events;
and
WHEREAS, Presidential proclamations recognizing National Flag Week customarily encourage
public ceremonies and events throughout the week to honor the flag and recite the Pledge of
Allegiance; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
recognizes June 8 — 14, 2008, as National Flag Week and June 14, 2008 as Flag Day.
