IN RE: PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SERVICES' DIVISION RESOLUTION
APPROVING PROJECT AREA AND PROJECT DISTRICT AREA (CRANBROOK EDUCATIONAL
COMMUNITY PROJECT) - CITY OF BLOOMFIELD HILLS
To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS t'nere exists in the County of Oakland the need for projects to
alleviate and prevent conditions of unemployment, to assist and retain local
industrial and commercial enterprises in order to strengthen and revitalize
the County's economy and to encourage the location and expansion of such
enterprises to provide needed services and facilities to the County and its
residents; and
WHEREAS the Economic Development Corporations Act, Act No. 338 of the
Michigan Public Acts of 1974, as amended (the Act") provides a means for the
encouragement of such projects in this County through the County's Economic
Development Corporation (the !E5C); and
WHEREAS the EDC has commenced proceedings under the Act for the benefit
of such a project (Cr.:.nLrc)-K Cc=ity Project) and has designated
to this Board of Commissioners a Project Area and Project District Area for
its approval;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of
Commissioners hereby certifies and approves the Project Area as designated by
the EDC; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, it having been determined that the
territory surrounding said designated Project Area will not be significantly
affected by the Project because the surrounding territory is devoted to
commercial/industrial uses, a Pro j ect District Area having the same
description as and boundaries coterminous with the Project Area herein
certified as approved be hereby established; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, it having been determined that there are
less than eighteen residents, real property owners, or representatives of
establishments located within the Proect District Area, a Project Citizens
District Council shall not be formed pursuant to Section 20(b) of the Act; and
BE :T FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk is hereby directed to
provide four certified copies of this resolution to the Secretary of the Board
of the EDC.
Chairperson, on behalf of the Planning and Building Committee, I move
the adoption at the foregoing resolution.

Cranbrook Educational Community

Company: Cranbrook Educational Community was founded by George and Ellen
Booth in 1904, and was incorporated in its current form in 1973.
Cranbrook is comprised of a pre-kindergarten through 12 th grade
independent college prep-school, a graduate academy of art, a
contemporary art museum and a natural history and science museum.
They focus on strong academics and a balance of fine arts and liberal arts
education. For 2008-09 Cranbrook enrolled 1,642 students, including 262
boarders. Cranbrook also enrolled 150 students from 10 disciplines, into
its Graduate Academy of Art. The campus includes 319 acres and features
the work of world-renowned architects. In 1989, it was designated a
National Historic Landmark.
Project: The project has 4 parts. The first of which is the renovation to the art
museum and library. These renovations will include necessary interior
and exterior repairs and upgrades. Also included will be the construction
of a 24,000 sq. ft. research and storage facility. The second phase of the
project will be the construction of a new 47,000 sq. ft. facility to serve as
the girls' middle school. The third phase of the project will be the major
restoration of the Cranbrook Quad and Thompson Oval. The Quad serves
as the main gathering place for the students. The Thompson Oval is the
schools main venue for outdoor athletics. The restoration will include the
installation of heated pavement in order to eliminate the use of destructive
chemicals used in snow and ice removal. The final step of the project will
be to upgrade the life safety and security infrastructure at the schools
Keppel Gymnasium, Music Room, Ice Arena and Broadside School.
